Is there an average agreed-upon time for exclusive performance/recording of commissioned pieces?
I recall pianist John Browning had exclusive use of the Barber piano concerto for five years. I believe that was an unusually long period for this type of agreement. What length of time for exclusivity is more usual / expected when it does not involve such highly established and well-known composers and performers? Are there varying time periods for works for larger scale forces, such as orchestral or concerti vs. for a few players, such as chamber music? Thank you in advance.

Rdenig has really summed it up: it's entirely dependent on the contents of the contractual obligations agreed for each individual commission. One commissioned work of mine, for one of the cathedrals here, is ceded in perpetuity to that particular institution and See, because the whole point of the commission -- ceremonial/liturgical in nature -- was for it to become unique to their service. On the other hand, more 'normal' commissions for concert works may be ceded for between two and five years at most. It completely depends on the context of the commission at the time it's arrived at. Since you specifically asked, the scoring (large body, chamber ensemble, soloist) has really no bearing as such, but their different needs, flowing forth from the very nature of their organisation, often will. A large ensemble will not want to have put the work in to realise a large new work from scratch and then find that every Tom, Dick or Harry could notionally be taking it up 'in competition' after just a year or two. (That undoubtedly will have been Browning's argument at the time, too....) (As a quid pro quo, should the commissioning body during the ceded period fail to perform the work -- in effect 'blocking it' -- a clause can be inserted to deal with that eventuality, forcing a minimum number of performances throughout the period stipulated or the composer can recall the performance rights to him/herself.) Hence, it's just about always a matter of careful, amicable negotiation. All the very best, as ever,
