One commissioned work of mine, for one of the cathedrals here, is ceded in perpetuity to that particular institution and See, because the whole point of the commission -- ceremonial/liturgical in nature -- was for it to become unique to their service. On the other hand, more 'normal' commissions for concert works may be ceded for between two and five years at most. It completely depends on the context of the commission at the time it's arrived at.
